Overview
Messe Basel, Hall 1.1, Basel, Switzerland
In this dual exhibition presented by Gallery VER, belief and myth are not treated as cultural motifs, but as active systems through which meaning is continuously made, unsettled, and reconfigured. Moving across painting and sculpture, the works trace how relations between humans, objects, animals, and environments are shaped by forms of value that are at once material, affective, and imagined.
Rather than locating belief within specific cultural frameworks, the exhibition approaches it as a condition that operates across lived experience—one that binds the visible to the invisible, and the material to what exceeds it. From this position, references drawn from Thailand and broader Asian contexts function not as points of origin, but as situated encounters through which larger questions are activated.
Everyday objects appear within the exhibition as unstable sites of projection, where meaning, memory, and reverence are continually negotiated rather than fixed. Images of animals, alongside the use of Gyotaku—the Japanese practice of fish printing—extend this inquiry into the entanglements between representation and trace, consumption and ritual, ecology and image-making.
Across the works, belief is neither illustrated nor explained; it is staged as a shifting field of relations that persists through transformation. The exhibition ultimately considers how symbolic systems continue to operate beyond the boundaries of culture or geography, shaping how worlds are perceived, organized, and inhabited.
