Tuguldur Yondonjamts

Overview
Born in 1977, Ulaanbaatar
Lives and works in Ulaanbatar, Mongolia
Tuguldur Yondonjamts approaches art-making as a process of imaginative investigation—an exploration of language, myth, memory, and the invisible forces that shape both human and nonhuman worlds. Working across drawing, video installation, sculpture, and artist books, his practice often manifests as complex visual systems that integrate maps, field notes, narratives, and symbolic elements. These works are grounded in rigorous research and close observation of environments, materials, and social contexts.

The nomadic culture of Central Asia serves as an essential framework for understanding his practice. Yondonjamts examines the relationship between tamed and untamed worlds, positioning his works as symbolic reflections on Mongolia’s social transformation and economic development while maintaining a poetic and speculative dimension.

Time, distance, and communication with remote or unseen spaces recur in his work. By intertwining factual information with dreams and imagination, Yondonjamts constructs visual systems that blur the boundaries between science and myth, reality and fiction. His interest in the animal world forms another significant dimension of his practice. In many works, animals are not merely subjects of observation but “agents” possessing their own languages and systems of meaning. Decoding the relationship between humans and animals thus becomes an ontological and ecological inquiry, opening new perspectives on coexistence.

Tuguldur Yondonjamts received his MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University, New York, USA.

His work has been presented internationally, including at the Ulaanbaatar Biennale, Natural History Museum of Mongolia (2025); Embodied Archive, Singapore Art Museum (2024); 2Day in Mongolia, Zanabazar Museum (2024); Heilung der Erde, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2024); and Open World, Thailand Biennale Chiang Rai (2023).
