Reflections of Girlhood Struggles
Thavika Savangwongsakul creates installations based on paintings. In her installations, alongside paintings, she incorporates ready-made objects that have been painted or inscribed with text, as well as fabrics. Her works utilize a diverse range of materials, and her expressions vary from figurative to abstract. Her contemporary expressions, which incorporate traditional techniques, are also influenced by graffiti, and she integrates spray painting and stencils.
What particularly captures the viewer’s eye is her vibrant use of color. At first glance, it appears bright and positive, yet at times it stimulates and confuses the viewer’s emotions. In recent years, she has also been working on immersive installations with interactive elements. This is art where the audience becomes a part of the work, creating a deeper connection between the artwork and the viewer.
In Thavika’s work, the energetic brushstrokes intermingle with a sense of freedom and the underlying pressure. The contradiction between the ideal person society demands and her true self, as well as the tension flowing beneath the cheerful colors, bring density and strength to her work. Thavika describes growing up, leaving the “Neverland” of childhood, as jumping down the rabbit hole of the adult “Wonderland.” While acknowledging that the essence of life is madness is difficult, Thavika’s work expresses the bittersweetness, anxiety, excitement, and peace of that life.
