Thasnai Sethaseree has launched a new book titled “Art and the Power of Vision, 2567 (What You Don’t See Will Hurt You),”
This book reflects on an exhibition the artist previously held at Gallery Ver in 2016 under the same name, “What You Don’t See Will Hurt You.” More information about the exhibition can be found at https://galleryver.com/event/what-you-dont-see-will-hurt-you/.
The book is only available in Thai.
Humans have created numerous adjectives to describe the feelings that arise from vision—happiness, sadness, beauty, ugliness, pain, allure, cruelty, grandeur, insignificance, distortion, and many other emotions that we may struggle to name based on what we see. It can be said that the pronouns for feelings are mostly mirror images of human eyesight, even though the sensation of sight never operates in isolation.
However, when the metaphor of the eye is placed in a position inseparable from political thought and moral order, the way we look becomes a means of governance as well as a way to mock and challenge power. We are all being watched, and we are all watching. We are left unattended and are seeking significance for ourselves in this book, which is written as a footnote referencing what’s visible in life through various practices and artworks that are woven together.
