UNDER THE RAINBOW - ภายใต้สายรุ้ง: Yujin Lee

Ethos, pathos, and logos are the three modes of persuasion. Otherwise known as the artistic proofs in Aristotle’s rhetorical theory, they resonate throughout the Yujin Lee’s solo exhibition, ‘Under the Rainbow’, which hypothesizes art and the artist’s role as a mediator between knowledge and understanding.

 

‘Drawing Conversation 2.0’ demonstrates the credibility and character (ethos) of the artist by setting up silent drawing sessions executed in collaboration with local artists. ‘Learning Thai’ is a site-specific durational performance that appeals to the visitor’s emotions (pathos), as the artist attempts to learn “Thai” through music—its lyrics, melody, rhythm, and everything else that may refer to the culture and history it originates from. As a foreign artist taking temporary residence in Bangkok, Lee sets out to invigorate the inert space that separates our bodies, languages, cultures, and beliefs. Lastly, the two-dimensional works in the exhibition, which are composed of pictures and words, put the exhibition’s overall logic and reason (logos) to the test. The artist, the public, and the community is gathered ‘Under the Rainbow’. In the end… what is gained and lost in this endeavor to reduce the inevitable gap between individuals, societies, and the countless cosmos?
