Through an excavation of the emotional, political, and spiritual remnants left behind by the violence of authoritarianism and failed ideologies, this exhibition draws viewers into what festers beneath the surface—contaminated dreams, decaying yet deeply rooted power structures, and parasites feeding on the collective memory shared by many.

One of a large collage composed of pixelated portraits of Thai prime ministers from the military, blurred and embedded into a background of a female body dissected into parts, symbolizing sexuality erased and controlled under the patriarchal Cold War regime. From history to the present, this decay spreads as a toxic legacy of militarism embedded in the body of the nation.

These tensions echo through a documentary by Soryut Iamueayut, Turning the Bhumi: The Uprising of Peasants in Northern Thailand, 1974-1976. The film chronicles landless farmers in Chiang Mai and Lamphun, whose struggle—joined by students—challenged feudal structures. Brutal crackdowns turned their dreams into betrayal, leaving behind a wounded silence.

The works in this exhibition offer no answers. Instead, they construct a space for critique, to unsettle and dismantle. In this disillusioned terrain, history still breathes through toxic remnants, inviting viewers into a landscape of an unstable past and an irretrievable future.

Gallery VER warmly invites everyone to experience and journey through the history and the scars of truth that have shaped Thailand in past eras, through the exhibition Toxic Remains: Parasites of a Betrayed Dream.

จากการขุดค้นเศษซากทางอารมณ์ การเมือง และจิตวิญญาณที่ยังตกค้างจากความรุนแรงของอำนาจนิยมและอุดมกาณ์ที่ล้มเหลว นิทรรศการนี้จะนำพาผู้ชมจมดิ่งไปสู่สิ่งที่เน่าเสียอยู่ใต้พื้นผิว ความฝันที่ปนเปื้อน โครงสร้างอำนาจที่ถูกกัดกินและยังฝังราก อีกทั้งปรสิตที่กัดกินอยู่ในความทรงจำร่วมกันกับใครหลายๆคน

หนึ่งในผลงาน คือ ภาพตัดแปะขนาดใหญ่ประกอบด้วยพิกเซลหน้าของนายกรัฐมนตรีไทยที่มาจากกองทัพ พร่าเลือนและถูกสอดแทรกไปกับพื้นหลัง ซึ่งเป็นเรือนร่างของผู้หญิงซึ่งถูกชำแหละแยกชิ้นส่วน เสมือนเพศวิถีที่ถูกควบคุมให้ลบเลือนเนื่องจากตกอยู่ในสังคมชายเป็นใหญ่ในยุคสงครามเย็น เรื่องราวที่เกิดขึ้นตั้งแต่ในประวัติศาสตร์จนมาถึงปัจจุบันล้วนมีผลพวงมาจากปรสิตที่แผ่ขยายสะท้อนถึงความเป็นพิษที่เกิดจากลัทธิทหารที่แทรกซึมอยู่ในเรือนร่างของชาติ 

ความตึงเครียดเหล่านี้ถูกตีและแผ่ขยายออกไปใน ภาพยนตร์สาคดีของ ศรยุทธ เอี่ยมเอื้อยุทธ เรื่อง พลิกผืนดิน: การต่อสู้ของชาวนา ในภาคเหนือ พ.ศ. 2517-2519 ภาพยนตร์ถ่ายทอดการต่อสู้ของชาวไร้ที่ดินในเชียงใหม่-ลำพูน ที่ซึ่งการต่อสู้ไม่ได้เกิดขึ้นเพียงแต่ชาวนา แต่ยังเป็นการร่วมมือกันของนักศึกษานำมาสู้ผลพวงการเรียกร้องเพื่อต่อต้านโครงสร้างศักดินา การปราบปรามอย่างโหดร้ายทำให้ความฝันของพวกเขาถูกทรยศ กลายเป็นความเงียบงันที่เต็มไปด้วยบาดแผล

ผลงานจากนิทรรศการนี้ไม่ได้ชี้นำหรือเสนอคำตอบแต่อย่างใด หากแต่เป็นการวางโครงสร้างซึ่งจะนำมาสู่การวิพากษ์ที่จะรบกวนและรื้อถอน พื้นที่ที่มลายศรัทธาลง ประวัติศาสตร์ยังคงหายใจผ่านเศษพิษอันตกค้าง เชื้อเชิญให้ผู้ชมก้าวสู่ภูมิทัศน์ของอดีตที่ไม่เคยมั่นคง และอนาคตที่ไม่มีทางหวนกลับได้
