Collapsing Clouds Form Stars, a Mini Retrospective of Work by Som Supaparinya

We are pleased to present Collapsing Clouds Form Stars, a mini-retrospective exhibition by artist Som Supapinya at Gallery VER. This exhibition brings together Supapinya’s major works that have never been shown in Thailand, including Collapsing Clouds Form Stars and Band ​Books series, which critically unveil, through spatial and linguistic approaches, precarious conditions in Thai society immediately post-2014 coup d’état and under military rule. The show also presents Supaparinya’s latest video work, The Unsung Lyric of Ping​*, that chronicles pivotal transformation of the Ping River (in the North of Thailand) before and after the major flood in 2024 and its catastrophic consequences that reflect an imbalance in relations between human beings and nature. The Unsung Lyric of Ping is a companion piece to The Rivers They Don’t See, currently exhibiting at the National Gallery, as part of the Bangkok Art Biennale 2024.

Gallery VER invites you to explore the multifaceted world of art – experiencing her.unique body of works shown together for the first time in this mini-retrospective exhibition, through diverse perspectives, perceptive interpretations, and fragile beauty that reveals a profound truth in nature and society.

ขอเชิญทุกท่านร่วมสัมผัสประสบการณ์ศิลปะร่วมสมัย ในนิทรรศการ ฝุ่นถล่มเป็นดาว นิทรรศการย้อนมองผลงาน​-ขนาดย่อ​ ของศิลปิน ส้ม ศุภปริญญา ที่ แกลเลอรี่เว่อร์ นิทรรศการครั้งนี้นับเป็นโอกาสพิเศษที่จะได้ชมผลงานที่ไม่เคยจัดแสดงในประเทศไทยมาก่อน รวบรวมผลงานเด่นหลากหลายชุด อาทิ Collapsing Clouds Form Stars และ Band ​Books ซึ่งเป็นชุดผลงานที่สะท้อนภาพสังคมไทยหลังการรัฐประหารครั้งล่าสุด และช่วงเวลาภายใต้การปกครองของกองทัพ นำเสนอผ่านมุมมองศิลปะที่กระตุ้นความคิดและชวนให้ตั้งคำถาม​ เมื่อย้อนกลับไปถึงจุดเปลี่ยนของสังคมในเชิงสถานที่และภาษา ​นอกจากนั้นจะมีการฉายครั้งแรกของ The Unsung Lyric of Ping​*: ผลงานชิ้นใหม่ล่าสุดที่บอกเล่าเรื่องราวการเปลี่ยนแปลงของแม่น้ำปิง สายน้ำสำคัญของภาคเหนือของไทย ก่อน ระหว่าง และหลังเหตุการณ์อุทกภัยครั้งใหญ่ในปี 2567 สะท้อนถึงความสัมพันธ์ที่ไม่สมดุลระหว่างมนุษย์และธรรมชาติ รวมถึงผลที่ตามมา ผลงานชิ้นนี้ยังได้ผลิตขึ้นคู่ขนานกับ​นิทรรศการปัจจุบัน ซึ่งแสดงผลงาน The Rivers They Don’t Seeณ หอศิลป์แห่งชาติ โดยเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเทศกาลศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติ บางกอก อาร์ต เบียนนาเล่ 2024 (Bangkok Art Biennale 2024).

Artist Bio

Som Supaparinya lives and works in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Studied Painting in Thailand and Media Arts in Germany. Her works encompass a wide variety of mediums such as installation, objects, still and moving images which have produced mainly with a documentarian and experimentarian approach. The works focus on the impact of human activities on other humans and landscape through political, historical, and literary lenses. Her works are stories on noodles cultures, the change of the riverscapes, cityscapes, routes, electricity generation, wars, resistance sites and banned books.

Upcoming shows: Collapsing Clouds Form Stars, a Mini Retrospective of Work by Som Supaparinya (Ver Gallery, Bangkok, 2025), The Shattered Worlds: Micro Narratives from the Ho Chi Minh Trail to the Great Steppe (BACC, Bangkok, April-July 2025), Melted Stars (DAAD Gallerie, Berlin, 2025).

She is a winner of the Han Nefkens Foundation –SouthEastAsian Video Art Production Grant 2024 which commissioned her new work, follows by exhibitions at 6 locations in Asia and Europe.
